As of early 2015, Google introduced their new “mobile friendly algorithm”. This is in an effort to provide visitors the optimal viewing experience since in general there has been significant increase in mobile website viewing. Unfortunately, it will also lead to penalising those sites which are not mobile ready and responsive when it comes to search rankings.
A thorough explanation of this major change can be found here: Google’s new mobile ready algorithm.
Google are looking for a more mobile friendly layout rather than a site which simply down-sizes as most of the older style sites do. The new responsive sites are also programmed for improved speed and useability.
